EUROPE'S largest South Asian celebration descends on Gunnersbury Park again on Sunday.

More than 70,000 people are expected to turn out for the sixth annual London Mela, which attracts participants and visitors from across the globe.

R&B singer Taio Cruz, Bhangra star Jassi Sidhu and DJs Bobby Friction and Nihal will be among the acts entertaining the crowds, while other highlights include an installation by Sri Lankan artist and peace protestor Thenuwara Chandragupta, plus numerous dance groups.

As well as the entertainment there are also clothes stalls and dozens of food stalls offering every type of South Asian delicacy.

Ajay Chhabra, London Mela artistic director, said: “I’m really looking forward to the whole day, as we have some superb performances – as well as world premieres.

“I’m always interested in the crowds we get. Although the heart of the Mela is very much from one place we do draw people from all sorts of backgrounds into the event. It really is a telling indication of the changing face of west London.”

Ajay has also commissioned a unique performance for this year’s Mela with the theme of people moving from one place to another, which will be performing three times across the day.

He said: “Last year we had more than 75,000 people across the day and we were blessed with wonderful weather.

“However, in previous years we have had less good weather and still got large crowds, because people know when they come to the Mela there are always places to get out of the rain, we have plenty of big tops and tents.

“It’s very much a family event, and there is definitely something for everyone.”

Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who was at the launch event for the Mela, said: “The London Mela is a magnificent event, which shows the breadth of South Asian arts and culture, and celebrates what London's Asian communities have brought to our city.

“And, as well as being an attraction for those living in west London, it is a great, free family day for all Londoners.”

The event starts at midday and runs until 8.30pm.
