THE shooting of five-year-old Thusha Kamelswaran is the inspiration for a gritty new film by a firm based in Greenford.
The crime shocked the nation in 2011 when Thusha was caught in a drug gang crossfire as she danced in her uncle’s shop in Stockwell, South London. She was left paralysed.
Now the film, RideBy, starring Tracy Beaker actress Jessie Williams, will look at the motives and lessons behind the shooting from the gang members’ perspective.
Golden Crab Film Production, of Ockham Drive, Greenford Park, made the film after co-producers Karim Prince Tshibangu and Aslam Parvez were touched by Thusha’s story.

Karim said: “Having a daughter myself the same age, I was shocked, Instead of telling Thusha’s story, we are telling it from the gang’s side and focusing on the consequences of such actions.
“But we are adding a twist, which sees us focusing on girl gangs to bring it up to date.”
Due out next year, it is backed by Thusha and her family, who worked with the writer, Matthew J Gunn, to get the emotion of what they suffered into the film.
The film stars Jessie Williams in the lead role of Cindy. Ellie Nixon plays the young girl, whose character is based on Thusha.
Jessie said: What Ride By does is bring out the truth of what is happening across the UK today, rather than tiptoeing around it. Through drama, we can send a powerful message.”
Director Ian Dray, who has worked on Harry Potter and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, said: “RideBy is hugely relevant to what is going on in this country today with the gang mentality.
“We decided to focus on the girl gangs as they are not usually portrayed, but in reality they are more disturbing and more violent than the males.”
