STUDENTS from St Benedict’s School, Ealing, heard from Bishop Jude Arogundade, of Nigeria, who visited yesterday (17).

He talked about how his diocese fell victim to one of Nigeria’s worst acts of violence against churchgoers. In June this year, gunmen opened fire during a Sunday service, killing 40 people.

His presence was part of the Aid to the Church in Need’s Red Wednesday campaign. It raises awareness of the plight of many persecuted Christians around the world.

He told students: “I saw such a terrible scene and I am still traumatised by it. There is such anger in people that they do these things to each other.”

He added: “You are among the 10% of young people in the world who are fortunate to have education, health, security, a beautiful environment. To whom much is given, much is expected – care for the poor, challenge injustice, and transform the world.”

Bishop Jude's talk was also attended by Patricia Hatton, from Aid to the Church in Need, who thanked St Benedict’s for supporting the Red Wednesday campaign.

IN a separate event, St Benedict’s student Tara, 16, has won the #EalingSewnUP Sustainable Fashion Mural Competition.

Run by Ealing’s climate action group, #ActForEaling, it was set up to promote sustainable fashion, making it fun and accessible for everyone in Ealing.

Tara won with her patchwork of images on how to upcycle clothes, rather than buy new ones. It will be painted near St Saviour’s Walk inside Ealing Broadway this Sunday (20) between 10am and 4pm.
