Director of Women’s Rugby Giselle Mather said it best in the post-match huddle - Trailfinders have announced themselves in the Allianz Premiership Women’s Rugby.

They came out on top in a battle of the league’s two new teams, beating Leicester Tigers 36-7 in front of a home crowd for their first win.

The full-time scenes were jubilant as Trailfinders celebrated a historic moment in the young team’s history which came off the back of a week where everything just clicked.

“We had a really good week,” Mather said. “When you're a new side that moment where everything suddenly starts to make sense all together and everybody getting it and playing together.

“Some of the tries we scored were really nice tries. Leicester are, a really good defensive side and we were able to find our way through with some really good rugby.

“We were playing the type of rugby that we're looking to try to play, so I'm particularly thrilled about that.

“The girls have worked so hard, all the staff, the effort that goes in and building a new group together and bonding, that is difficult.

“And through the week, I could feel it coming and then they've gone and produced what I was really hoping for.”

Threads of black and gold run through Trailfinders with several former Wasps players joining Mather in Ealing.

One of those is Liz Crake, the former Wasps captain, who scored two tries in Trailfinders’ win to kickstart her season.

She said: “Starting in this league has been difficult, I have been at Wasps for so long, so starting in a new team, it's very new, it's been quite tricky.

“Against Leicester, I feel like I've really shown what I'm about, that I am back, and this is where I want to be.

“I've got Giselle, I've got Oli [Bishop], they've been my coaches for years so, to a certain degree, it feels like a home away from home.

“But it has been a big adjustment, with lots of new players, and I'm quite a shy person generally so meeting a lot of new people is tricky for me.

“So, I think I had a few weeks where it was great, a few weeks where I struggled and now, I feel like this week, I turned it around.

“Giselle picks good people, she's very good at building a team, she's very good at building an ethos and standards and everything around it, that is what she does.”

Mather has taken a realistic approach to what is possible for a team that has been built from scratch.

The former England international had targeted Saturday’s fixture against Leicester as the chance for a first win after opening games against former champions Harlequins and Saracens, and her plan well and truly came off.

She added: “We have just been getting to know everybody and for players to start to form those playing partnerships on the field, that's what rugby is about.

“You could see things clicking against Leicester, everybody being in the shapes that we want to play and how we want to do it.

“It's just that work and effort that's got to go in before you can ever expect that to happen.

“I'm getting to know 50 new people, and my staff are new as well. We're all bonding as a group because the team behind the team is really important to help each and every one of them grow and develop.

“It's a real privilege because we're a group of people that have come together with a common goal, for one purpose and we're clear where we want to go, clear what we're trying to do, and everybody is now working together.

“You could hear the noise afterwards in the group, what a win does for a group like that.”

What a win does for Trailfinders is give them belief as they look ahead to their next fixture against Bristol Bears, who beat Loughborough Lightning 46-17 in Round 4.

The noise among the group was clearly heard as Mather finished her triumphant team talk.

She said: “Hold what this win feels like. When we got to Bristol, why not?”

“Why not? If we play as we did against Tigers, and we go after whatever we pick to go after, and we go after it en masse. Why not?”
