Over three days at the end of April (26, 27 and 28) transport and design enthusiasts are invited to the London Transport Museum Depot in Acton, west London, to discover design icons from the capital’s past.

The Museum’s collection highlights over 160 years of incredible design pieces from the first roundels to the one and only red Routemaster bus.

At the upcoming ‘London by Design’ Depot Open Days, visitors can celebrate this history and explore behind-the-scenes of the Museum’s extensive collections store. This transport treasure trove houses over 320,000 objects not on display in the Covent Garden Museum.

Frank Pick – the first chief executive of London Transport when it was created in 1933 - pioneered a world-renowned design culture in public transport at London Transport. This includes design icons like Harry Beck’s diagrammatic Underground map, Charles Holden’s station architecture and Enid Marx’s moquette seating fabric patterns.

Visitors to the Museum Depot can discover this story as they climb aboard historic Tube trains, see buses from a bygone era, marvel at vintage maps, discover iconic posters and explore the largest collection of transport signage in the world.

A line-up of expert talks, tours, and craft workshops for families will also be on offer at the ‘London by Design’ Depot Open Days.

“Come and hear from our expert speakers, build your dream Lego city and test your knowledge of London Transport’s moquette patterns”, said a museum spokesperson.

“You can explore the largest collection of transport signage in the world, and admire the Tube carriages, trains, and unique road vehicles from London’s past. Families can also enjoy activities together too, including designing your very own Underground tiles.”

“Our Depot Open Days are a fantastic chance to step behind-the-scenes and discover more of our historic collection that is not usually on display to the public.”
