Ranah Akua Stoiber was pushed to the limit but came through her first match on grass this summer as she progressed to the second round of the LTA’s Lexus Ilkley Trophy.

The 19-year-old came from a set down to beat Slovakia’s Renata Jamrichova 4-6 7-5 7-6 (5) in a hard-fought encounter.

Stoiber had come through qualifying to make it into the main draw, but the weather had meant that she played both of her qualifiers on indoor hard court.

The adjustment to playing on the grass was a challenge, but Stoiber was delighted by how she coped with the change of surface.

She said: “It was my first match on the grass. It was pretty tough. I just wanted to get out there and battle, fight as much as I could. The last two matches I’ve had were on indoor hard so I was just really happy to get some time on the grass.

“I think I adjusted quite well, I didn’t have a lot of hitting on the grass, even my warm-up was on indoor hard. But I just focused on what I know to do well on the grass. I really enjoy playing on the grass, so just trusted myself.”

Stoiber certainly had to battle, saving three break points at 5-5 in the second set, while she later saw four match points slip by in the third before going into a final set tie-break.

But from there, she held her nerve, setting up a second-round meeting with Canada’s Rebecca Marino.

And Stoiber gave it absolutely everything to ensure she came out on top in the end.

She added: “I’ve been out of tournaments for a while so the fight in me wanted it really bad.”
