The opening weekend of the Paris 2024 Olympics will provide one of the most anticipated moments of the Games for British fans as Adam Peaty looks to make history on day two.
The 29-year-old has endured a tricky time of it since retaining his 100m breaststroke crown in Tokyo but he is back in the pool and ready to rewrite the record books.
In Paris, Peaty is aiming to become only the second man ever to win three Olympic golds in the same swimming event, joining Michael Phelps in that select group.
And he will have the chance to do so on day two, which will also see one of the faces of the Games, home favourite Leon Marchand, go in his best event, the 400m individual medley.
Marchand broke Phelps’ last remaining world record in the event at the World Championships in 2023, and is the red-hot favourite to take gold in the first of potentially four individual events.
In all, there will be 13 Olympic titles up for grabs on day two, three of which will come in the pool.
Away from the swimming, the women’s mountain biking should provide plenty of thrills and spills. Home star Pauline Ferrand-Prévot has won four of the last five world titles, but the only exception to that rule was in 2021 when Britain’s Evie Richards claimed the rainbow jersey.
Malvern’s Richards is joined by Welsh youngster Ella Maclean-Howell in the British contingent.
In terms of star power, the men’s basketball might have the most famous sportspeople at the Games, and there is one match that everyone will be desperate to follow on day two.
USA, led by the legendary LeBron James, face their most challenging match of the group stages when they take on a Serbia side featuring Nikola Jokic, a three-time NBA MVP who is widely-regarded as the world’s best player, this could be a match for the ages.
The team sports do not end there. Day two marks the beginning of the women’s rugby sevens competition, where Team GB will be looking to upset the dominance of Australia and New Zealand, while in the hockey, the British men face South Africa and the women take on Spain in group play.
On the judo mat, Chelsie Giles has added world silver and European gold to the Olympic bronze she won in Tokyo and is looking to become Team GB’s first-ever Olympic champion judoka.
Kimberley Woods is another Brit with medal ambitions in the canoe slalom while TikTok sensations Megan Havers, Penny Healey and Bryony Pitman go for gold in the archery women’s team final.
Healey, who was inspired to try archery by Disney movie ‘Brave’, has pet emus at home and won her first individual World Cup gold last year.
In the football, former Chelsea boss Emma Hayes’ USA face a blockbuster group stage clash against Germany.
Do not miss: Make sure to keep an eye on the canoe slalom.
Kimberley Woods has six world titles to her name across a range of disciplines, and will be looking to add a first Olympic medal to her collection. She will compete in the K1 single.
Star of the day: Nicola Jokic kept fans guessing as to his Olympic participation - he has skipped key international events in the past due to gruelling NBA seasons - but the Denver Nuggets star is in Serbia’s star-studded squad and ready to shine on the basketball court.
Best Brit: It is almost impossible to look anywhere but to the pool, considering what Adam Peaty could achieve should he win gold.
But judoka Chelsie Giles brought home Team GB’s first medal in Tokyo and how she fares in the 52kg category will be intriguing.
