PEOPLE in Ealing are being urged to donate their unused electronic devices.
It follows research revealing that 55 million such items are stockpiled in drawers across the country.
Almost one in five Ealing borough residents have no computer at home, while more broadly 270,000 Londoners have no access to internet of any kind.
Elizabeth Anderson, CEO of the Digital Poverty Alliance, which is working with Ealing Council, PayByPhone and ICT Reverse, said: “Our scheme in Ealing is a great opportunity for people to help out their community.”
The scheme accepts all mobile phones, tablets and laptops and their charging cables for refurbishing and handing on to families in the borough.
Recyclers are securely wiping the data, programs, photos and all other files from each device.
Any devices that can’t be reused will be used to fix other laptops, tablets and phones.
The donation hubs are at Acton, Northolt, Ealing Central and Southall libraries and Hanwell Community Centre.
