Team GB sailors John Gimson and Anna Burnet have their eyes set on adding to their Olympic medal haul and are nicely placed going into the mixed multihull medal race.

The couple on and off the water finished the opening series with three more strong performances on day 11, with a victory in Race 11 sandwiched between a fifth and third place finish in Marseille.

Having initially endured difficulties in their Paris 2024 campaign, they are now well in contention for hardware, sitting pretty in third ahead of the final outing.

“It was a really good day,” Burnet said. “It was more of the same for us in terms of our approach.

“It was quite light winds, so we really needed to focus on the details, and we did that. By the second race we won our first of the whole event, it felt like it was coming to us a bit more and it might be our day, so we take confidence from that.

“Honestly I’m not sure how we approach tomorrow yet, we need to plan. In terms of the mental toughness, we’ve had a difficult week, and we’ve needed to chip away and grind away so we’re really happy with that. It’s not over yet, we keep fighting until the end.”

With points worth double in the all-important medal race, Team GB’s sailing power couple will seek to finish with a bang as they look to rise even further up the rankings.

They are currently just six points off second-placed Argentina, while Olympic champions-elect Italy possesses a surely insurmountable lead in first, sitting 20 points ahead of Tokyo 2020 silver medallists Gimson and Burnet.

Nevertheless, the Brits will be full of confidence going into final day, with a taste for victory fresh on the tongue.

Gimson added: “Nice to remind ourselves what it felt like to win a race. It was a good day and we’re super happy.

“Our coach has reminded us that we’re doing the right things. We need to stick to our processes. He’s been a good person to have as a sounding board.”
