EALING has featured its star athletes over the years, but its older residents have a way to go to match their younger counterparts.

In the 16th staging of the Better Club Games tournament for over-60s, held at the Olympic Park’s Copper Box Arena, the borough finished 20th of the 20 competing teams.

The annual event, put on by charitable social enterprise GLL, featured more than 400 older people.

The Battle of the Boroughs pitted contestants from London and the South East in a range of friendly activities, including darts, dominoes, short tennis, short-mat bowls, swimming, badminton, table tennis, cycling, walking netball and walking football.

More than 200 people took part in the walking sports a week earlier at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, with  more than 100 in timed swims at local clubs.

Team Ealing unfortunately brought up the rear, with Epsom & Ewell taking the overall title from Waltham Forest and Greenwich.

Competitors are drawn from Active Ageing Clubs run by GLL in leisure centres.

Active ageing has led to increased physical and mental health as well as reducing social isolation.

The 2024 Better Club Games ambassador was actor and radio presenter Christopher Biggins, 76.
