EALING Liberal Democrats are celebrating after winning the Hanger Hill ward by-election for Ealing Council yesterday (10).

Jonathan Oxley captured the previously Conservative-held seat. He achieved  a 25% swing to beat the Conservatives by 800 votes.

Mr Oxley was the Interim Chief Executive Officer at Ofcom.

He said, after the result was announced at Greenford Hall: “I have been listening to residents in Ealing over the past three years and it is clear we need the council and police to work together to make Hanger Hill cleaner and safer.”

While Labour have a clear majority on the council, with 59 of the 70 seats, the Lib-Dems now have seven and the Conservatives four.

Hanger Hill was one of three by-elections in the borough on Thursday.

In South Acton and Northolt Mandeville, Labour comfortably retained their seats.

The by-elections were called after three Ealing councillors were elected to Parliament in the July general election.

In South Acton, Callum Anderson (Labour), stood down after being elected as MP for Buckingham and Bletchley.

The others who resigned were Gregory Stafford (Conservative) in Hanger Hill, after being elected as MP for Farnham and Bordon, and Deirdre Costigan (Labour) in Northolt Mandeville. She is now  the MP for Ealing-Southall.
