STAINES TOWN 1, BRENTFORD 2. BRENTFORD, unable to score on their tour of the West Country, found their shooting boots in Tuesday’s friendly at Staines where second-half goals by Matt Somner and Mark Peters earned a narrow win over the non-leaguers.
Trialist Massou Thea, a French-speaking striker from Mali, turned out for Brentford in the first-half in which Stephen Evans had a ‘goal’ disallowed for the Bees and Damian Panter fired narrowly wide for Staines.
For the second-half Brentford brought on Gary McPhee and Mark Peters, while Staines introduced youngsters Dean Pitcher and Jack Smillie, whose father Neil was a favourite player at Griffin Park.
Somner headed Brentford in front in the 58th minute from Robert Traynor’s pinpoint cross, but Staines were level 11 minutes later.
Kezie Ibe chested the ball down to Danny Rouco whose 20-yard drive was deflected past 'keeper Alan Julian by substitute Andy Frampton.
Brentford, visiting Staines for the first time in 12 years, regained the lead within three minutes. Peters raced almost half the length of the field to slot the ball past advancing keeper Lovett and stake his claim for a first team place.
