CONSULTATION is under way on a new parking scheme for Southall.

Ealing Council has sent out more than 2,600 survey forms, with a deadline for responses of October 2.

The plan is aimed at freeing up additional spaces in eight roads in the Southall Broadway controlled parking zone, currently reserved for use by residents between 10am-8pm.

If it goes ahead, a ‘dual use’ approach will be introduced in the area. This means that residents’ bays will also be available to shoppers and other people who buy tickets, between the same times.

The roads being considered are: Alexandra Avenue, South Avenue, Greenford Avenue, Meadow Road, Park View Road, St Joseph’s Drive, Beatrice Road and Avenue Road.

Cllr David Millican, cabinet member for Regeneration and Transport, said the consultation had been prompted by feedback from Southall traders, who complain customers are being discouraged because of the lack of convenient parking in the area.

“Our research shows these eight streets have spare spaces during the day,” he said. “With a discounted annual parking permit also on offer, the proposal could potentially have benefits for residents, people visiting Southall and local businesses.

“Of course, the trial cannot work without the support of the community, and it is only fair that the final decision is in their hands.”

If the idea wins sufficient support, the trial would initially run for 12 months.
