It has been evident by the kind of work that has been displayed by Rahul Nath that he is attracted to controversy and subjects that many actors shy away from. With Foreign comes that stamp but also a refreshing look at subject matters told in a realistic form Foreign begins with the story of Radhika, (played to perfection by Puja Mohindra) a young girl about to start a new married life in America with the supposed man of her dreams. Her fears and insecurities seem nothing less of what we can expect from someone who is about to marry a man that she has seen very little of before. But with the comfort of her elder sister Geeta (Ananya Khare of Devdas fame) who has already walked down that road successfully, she feels less worried and concerned. However the situation for Radhika is far from the success that her sister has had in marriage and it becomes evident on her nuptial night where her husband -Vikram (Stephan Singh) is abusive and Radhika is left confused to whether she has been raped. To add insult to the already injured, a mother-in-law that makes bitch seem like a tame word- Kanta (Shruti Tewari) is verbally abusive and makes Radhika fully aware that she has less respect than the house dog Ruffles All seems to be going horribly wrong for the newly wed, and matters get worse when she starts to fall ill and has unexplained bruising. As a result she takes upon herself to visit the local doctor – Ajay (Rahul Nath), who is a family friend, but also a caring and respectful individual. Radhika feels the security with him and explains that she is being abused. Ajay tells her it is just a matter of time and everything will be okay. In the midst of the whole mess, Ajay notes Radhika’s symptoms and asks her to join for him lunch a few days later A few days later arrive and the story takes a dramatic turn when it is revealed that Radhika is HIV positive. Ajay is emotionally traumatised and Radhika is speechless; how did a young and innocent girl contract HIV? Why is Ajay frantic? What has Vikram done?
Foreign will give you a great insight to what the world has come to when you touch on the story of relationships and not just sexual relationships, but that of friendships and relations. The story is fast moving and has the perfect combination of several parallel story lines that all interconnect with the perfect dose at different intervals in the movie. The direction and writing are clever and in places in the movie the visuals speak very loud words. Rahul Nath has done a tactful move by making a movie that circles around a feminine main lead, but then adding strong leads and support around that. Not to mention a climax that will leave you stunned and shocked as you leave the theatre A movie cannot survive with just great visuals and direction alone, performances play a strong role and that’s where Foreign draws its biggest credit. Anaya Khare has proven many times before why she is the actress that she is, and with her portrayal as Geeta she gives a fine and refined performance. Shruti Tewari as Kanta may seem overdone to some people, but to the majority she will be the bitch that you want her to be. She gives nothing short of a great performance and other than looking modern and chic as her character, she delivers a performance to remember. Stephan Singh looks great, but unfortunately disappears and is overshadowed by the other performances. However the movie is solely driven by the two main leads that are Rahul Nath and Puja Mohindra.
Rahul Nath has proven so many times before that when it comes to drama, he knows what to do and how to do it, and this time round he impresses even more with giving an extra kick to his delivery. He steals many of the scenes that he is in, but is outstanding in his breakdown scene with Radhika and Vikram. This undoubtedly is one feather in his cap that he will hold for a long time. And last but not least, Puja Mohindra. I would like to say just watch her and you will be left speechless, but she deserves a quality mention here. She plays the nuances and the attitude of Radhika with the utmost ease and her look is just incredible from start to finish. The attention to wardrobe, make up and the acting journey is a perfect 10 throughout Foreign has treaded over many foreign lands including here in the UK, New Zealand, India and the USA and has been honored with awards for Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor for Rahul Nath
