EALING Council is to spend £1.25 million on CCTV cameras to keep the borough's streets safe.
It will buy 17 cameras to watch over Greenford, Northolt, West Ealing, Hanwell, East Acton and Oldfield Circus.
The money will also be used to buy five mobile CCTV cameras which will be used in crime hotspots as well as an automated number plate recognition (ANPR) system to spot stolen and untaxed vehicles.
Cllr Sue Emment, cabinet member for safer communities, said: "CCTV cameras are going up in areas where residents and businesses have been calling for them for many years.
"The council has worked in partnership with them and the police on where the cameras should be installed.
"Making our communities safer is one of this council's key priorities and the funding for the new cameras clearly shows we are taking action.
"We hope the result will be that decent law-abiding residents and traders will be more comfortable living and working in our borough."
The council and the police will work together to install the cameras in a rolling programme over the next two years.
