AN EALING student has beaten more than a hundred aspiring artists from top colleges across London to win first prize in a poster competition run by the London Transport Museum.

Shazia Ahmad, 19, from Ealing and West London College, will see her poster splashed across London tube stations as part of the museum's re-launch, which has seen the Grade II-listed Victorian building undergo a year's worth of refurbishment.

Depicting the evolution of transport from the horse-drawn coach to the present day tube, Shazia's entry caught the eye of judges thanks to her cheeky and challenging concept, impressing them with her ability to "think outside the box".

She told the Ealing Times: "I'm over the moon to have won - my tutor Lee helped me loads and made sure I kept on going even when I once lost everything I had done because I hadn't saved it.

"It made me even more determined to get it right."

Shazia is currently studying A-levels in art and design, English literature and media studies at the college. Her tutor, Lee Stannard, incorporated the competition into the students' coursework in order to give them a taste of what working in an advertising agency would be like.

Students had to answer a brief, submit a range of rough ideas for approval, produce a well-realised creative piece of artwork and meet challenging deadlines.

As part of her prize, Shazia undertook a week's work experience at a top advertising agency in central London.

Mr Stannard said: "I'm really proud of Shazia, she has done really well and made a determined effort to answer the brief creatively and effectively.

"At the college we try to give students a taste of real life work experience as much as possible in order to give them an idea of what to expect in business."
