Brentford head coach Thomas Frank believes his side’s pre-season campaign is firmly on track following a productive week at a training camp in Austria.
The Bees wrapped up their short trip with a goalless draw against Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv on Saturday, which saw recent arrivals David Raya and Pontus Jansson don Bees colours for the first time.
Ahead of his side’s return to the UK, Frank said he was pleased with the way the Brentford squad was shaping up and how they have responded to a string of gruelling sessions on the continent.
He said: “I strongly believe we took some good steps going forward this week.
“We had a top hotel, top facilities, and a very good atmosphere off the pitch between the staff and the players.
“We played a very strong team, who were in the Europa League last year, but it was a display of two good sides giving each other a very competitive match.
“One thing is the game we played but the attitude and the effort the players have put into the whole first three weeks of pre-season has been an upgrade on before.
“There have been a lot of very tough sessions but the boys have just embraced it and done really well.
“The team have definitely got closer and the new players have blended in straight from the start, so it all looks very promising.”
Despite not featuring in Saturday’s stalemate, Brentford’s latest arrival Mathias Jensen also flew over to Austria to spend the latter part of the week with his new colleagues.
The 23-year-old, who played for Denmark at last month’s European Under-21 Championships, became the club’s fifth signing of the summer after joining from Celta Vigo for a reported fee of £3.5 million on an initial four-year deal.
Meanwhile, Brentford are adjusting to life without England Under-21 international Ezri Konsa, who has left Griffin Park for Premier League newcomers Aston Villa in a deal worth £12 million
Konsa spent one season with the Bees and made 47 appearances in all competitions – but skipper Romaine Sawyers is confident the Bees will continue to progress despite his departure.
Ahead of Brentford’s next friendly away at Wycombe on July 20, the 27-year-old says the atmosphere around the club is as good as he has ever experienced.
He said: “Apart from going on a boat trip, we’ve not done anything in particular to come together – we’ve just naturally gelled with each other.
“Everyone knows how much we like to have a tightly-knitted group and the new boys have settled straight in.
“They’ve all showed their quality. We’re all looking fit and healthy, and there are a lot of positives to take.”
